After 68 teams entered the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, four teams will face off today to determine the national championship matchup. UConn is two games away from back-to-back championships as the Huskies face Alabama in the second national semifinal tonight.
No. 1 overall seed UConn looks unstoppable, having remained dominant throughout March Madness with double-digit wins in all of their games. The Crimson Tide won't be easy to intimidate though. West Region champion Alabama's already eliminated No. 1 seed North Carolina during the Sweet 16 and No. 6 Clemson in the Elite Eight.
The Huskies have been dominating the competition in the NCAA Tournament, winning each of their four March Madness games by at least 17 points. UConn flew past Illinois in the Elite Eight, overwhelming the Fighting Illini with an incredible 30-0 run. If the Huskies can capture the national title, they would become the first team since the 2006-07 Florida Gators to win back-to-back championships.
The Crimson Tide were able to escape the West Region of the bracket, eliminating Charleston, Grand Canyon, North Carolina and Clemson on their way to the Final Four. Alabama fans will be ready to roll on Saturday night, as this is the first time the team has reached this stage of the tournament.
Alabama coach Nate Oats had to rebuild his roster and replace three assistant coaches. The pieces ended up fitting perfectly.
The fast-and-furious Crimson Tide were among one of the nation’s best offenses all season and rolled into the program’s first Final Four.
The run has taken Alabama to the desert, where the Tide face a daunting task trying to stop the juggernaut that is reigning national champion UConn.
UConn (35-3) dominated the 2023 bracket, winning every game by at least 13 points for its fifth national championship.
Coach Dan Hurley had to replace five of his top seven scorers from that team, yet the Huskies have been even more dominant in their bid to become the first repeat national champions since Florida in 2006-07.
UConn won its first four NCAA Tournament games by an average of 27.8 points and has won 10 straight tournament games over two seasons by double digits. The Huskies have trailed all of 28 seconds in this year’s bracket and pulled off one of the greatest March Madness runs in history against Illinois in the Elite Eight, reeling off 30 straight points in a 25-point win.
In their respective Elite Eight showdowns, the Crimson Tide overcame the No. 6-seeded Clemson Tigers 89-82 in a closely-fought contest to claim the West Region title.
However, Alabama will be the heavy underdogs in the penultimate round as East Region winner UConn is the No. 1 overall ranked team in college basketball.
The Huskies, who are the defending national champions, have enjoyed one of the best two-year dominating runs by a basketball program in NCAA history.
They have now won a March Madness record 10 straight NCAA Tournament games by double digits after annihilating Illinois en route to a 77-52 victory on March 30.
UConn have multiple soon-to-be pros, making it difficult to single out one as the key impetus. It's a relentless, ultra-efficient offence and a suffocating, impenetrable defense. Great passing, top rim protection, good rebounding, and excellent coaching. It's an unstoppable force still hungry for even more success.
The UConn Huskies have been performing exceptionally well and their recent Elite Eight game against Illinois proved to be no different. The Huskies dominated the game, winning 77-52, and secured their spot in the Final Four. In addition, the team set a March Madness record for achieving 10 consecutive double-digit victories. Donovan Clingan led the Huskies to victory with an impressive 22 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks. UConn is aiming for back-to-back national championships and the sixth overall title.
In an Elite Eight matchup, Alabama beat Clemson 89-82 to secure the Crimson Tide's spot in the Final Four. Mark Sears scored 23 points for the Alabama, while Jarin Stevenson came off the bench and contributed 19 points to the victory over the Tigers.
UConn is on a mission to repeat their national title win from 2023, with Dan Hurley leading Donovan Clingan, Tristen Newton, Alex Karaban and Hassan Diarra to their second straight Final Four, and bringing new faces like Cam Spencer along for the show. But they’ll have to contend with a championship-hungry Alabama, who missed out on the Final Four last year after getting eliminated in the Sweet 16.
Alabama beat the No. 6 Clemson Tigers 89-82 in the quarterfinal, with Mark Sears dropping 23 points and propelling his narrative as the once-overlooked point guard to NCAA super star even further. Sears has now become one of college basketball’s top scorers and 3-point shooters.
Now Sears and the Crimson Tide must contend with the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, and the heavy hitters they bring to the table, including Clingan, Spencer and Diarra, who dropped 22, 11 and 11 points, respectively, in the Huskies’ win over Illinois in the Elite Eight.
